Concise and Efficient Total Synthesis of Lycopodium Alkaloid Magellanine

The power of the masked o-benzoquinone Diels–Alder protocol is shown in a total synthesis of magellanine ((±)-3). The highly compact molecular architecture of 3 was constructed from acetovanillone (1) via a masked o-benzoquinone 2 in an overall yield of 12 % over 16 steps (or 9 % over 14 steps).
