High-luminance green emission has been achieved from an electroluminescent (EL) device consisting of a Zn2SiO4:Mn thin-film phosphor and a thick BaTiO3 ceramic insulator. The EL characteristics are strongly dependent on the preparation conditions of the Zn2SiO4:Mn thin film deposited by rf magnetron sputtering. The high-luminance green emission, which results from the 4G-6S transition in the Mn2+ ion, is obtained in a device using a Zn2SiO4:Mn thin film postannealed at 1000°C. A luminance of 3400 cd/m2 and a maximum luminous efficiency of 0.15 lm/W were obtained in the device driven with a sinusoidal-wave voltage of 430 V at 5 kHz.
