The stability thresholds of four basic journal bearing types are found. Increasing groove size (up to 90°) is found to exert a strong destabilizing effect. Increasing aspect ratio (L/D) also has a destabilizing effect. The stability of each type was found to improve progressively with preload. The influence of bore shape was found to be less important than groove size, α, or preload, δ. For fixed values of α, δ and L/D, the bore shapes in increasing order of stability were found to be: circular, lemon bore, offset halves, three lobe. Some variations on the three-lobe design are investigated.
