From studies of the magnetic-field dependence of the Hall coefficient in p-type samples of Cd x Hg 1- x Te, with x in the region of 0·25, the intrinsic concentration has been determined down to lower temperatures than has previously been possible. The temperature dependence of the intrinsic concentration differs from that calculated for the band model. It is suggested that tails of states on the band edges may be responsible for the discrepancy.
