Summary The loss of potassium and sodium from preloaded excised barley and bean roots was compared under identical experimental conditions. In barley roots, metabolic inhibitors stimulated the potassium loss but inhibited that of sodium, indicating an active mechanism for sodium extrusion. In excised bean roots, such a mechanism could not be demonstrated and the losses of potassium and sodium were both stimulated by DNP and cold‐treatment.
