As a complement to the discussion started by Arthur House, new facts and new arguments are furnished which reinforce the theory according to which: (a) many variations in vowel duration are physiologically conditioned, (b) and those variations that are conditioned, and not phonemically learned, are due to factors that are cross-linguistically valid.
