In an experiment now in progress concerning the effects of certain rations on the deposition of fat in laying hens and the fat in egg yolk, it was necessary to know the pH value of certain organs, fats and parts of the digestive tract of one- and two-year-old White Leghorn and Rhode Island Red hens, and of cockerels of both breeds and ages. One- and two-year-old White Leghorn and Rhode Island Red cockerels and hens were selected from the Station flocks so that one group of hens of each breed was in laying, partial molt, full molt and nonlaying condition. Each group contained five hens, and there were five cockerels. The flock had been fed for six weeks a mash composed of ground yellow corn 53.5, mixed wheat feed 21.0, soybean oil meal 4.0, alfalfa leaf meal 2.0, dried skimmilk 8.0, meat scrap 6.0, salt 1.0, limestone 1.5, cod liver . . .
