A naturally occurring and non-toxic cross-linking agent, genipin, was used to crosslink the chitosan (GC) and chitosan/poly (ethylene glycol) (GC/PEG) blends in order to obtain the insoluble sorbents for heavy metal ions. The kinetic data of adsorption were evaluated based on both pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetics and indicated that the pseudo-second order fit best with high correlation coefficients. Both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were tested for the modeling of experimental data. The results indicated that Ni2+ followed the Langmuir isotherm model, while Pb2+ followed the Freundlich isotherm model in both single and binary metal ion systems. The chitosan component showed the competition effects on adsorption in binary metal ion systems. In the desorption process, both GC and GC/PEG films maintained a good sorbent restoration capability of 80% in presence of 0.1 mol L−1 HNO3 solutions at each adsorption/desorption cycle.
