A Fe3Ni5 cube with all surfaces capped by sulfur atoms is found in the structure of [Fe3Ni5S6I8]4⊖ (1). It forms spontaneously from the hexanuclear cluster ion [Fe6S6I6]2⊖ and [NiI4]2⊖. The large tendency to form 1 is in agreement with the results of calculations on M8S6 clusters, which predict that such clusters are stable when, as here, they have 110 skeletal electrons.
