Experimental characterization reveals spin-glass transitions in layered pyrochlore-like oxides, indicating that cation distribution directly tunes magnetic order.
It has been shown that Y2Fe4/3W2/3O7, as well as Y2FeTaO7, have a hexagonal layered pyrochlore-like structure related to the space group R 3̄ . However, Y2Fe4/3W2/3O7 crystal lattice has some differences which have been studied by X-ray diffraction analysis and Mossbauer spectroscopy. It has been shown that W6+ ions occupy only 9e sites, while Ta5+ ions can enter into two nonequivalent 3a and 9e sites. This structural feature is also observed for the solid solutions Y2Fe1+x/3Ta1–xW2x/3O7 and leads to an increase of 3a site occupation with Fe3+ proportionally to x. The magnetic properties of Y2Fe1+x/3Ta1–xW2x/3O7 are mostly determined by strong short-range antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between neighboring Fe3+ ions located at the 9e sites, which form a quasi-two-dimensional frustrated lattice. Spin-glass transitions are observed for all compositions Y2Fe1+x/3Ta1–xW2x/3O7. Transition temperatures, Tg = 4.2–8.3 K, also grow proportionally to the iron amount in Y2Fe1+x/3Ta1–xW2x/3O7.
