Alignment of the 2p 5 3s 2 ( 2 P 3 2/) state in atomic magnesium is studied for e - , H + and He + impact ionisation by measuring the angular distribution of the emitted Auger electrons. Impact velocities range from 0.3 nu 2p to 10.0 nu 2p , where nu 2p is the velocity of the magnesium 2p electron. For electron and ion impact marked differences are observed near nu = nu 2p and strong alignment is induced at lower ion velocities. The experimental data are compared with PWRA calculations by Berezhko and Kabachnik (1977).
