By measuring the surface tilt angles in a hybrid nematic layer with homogeneously tilted and reversely tilted (splayed) parts, the strength of anchoring can be obtained. The theory and some experimental demonstrations of the method are presented. For SiO coating and MBBA liquid crystal, the measured anchoring energy is 4 × 10−6 J/m2.
