Electron energy distribution functions (e.d.f.) in argon discharge and post-discharge conditions have been studied by taking into account the influence of excited states through superelastic and inelastic collisions and Penning ionizations. We show that the excited states largely alter the tail of the e.d.f. As a result, the excitation and ionization rates are strongly modified.
