A precise evaluation of the fine structure of non-penetrating Rydberg states requires a relativistic wavefunction for the relative motion of the Rydberg electron and the core. The authors show that Dirac wavefunctions can only be used in the case of spinless cores. For all other cases, the authors present new wavefunctions and apply them to helium Rydberg states. For comparison, lithium states are also discussed.
