The ratio of the cross sections for Penning ionization of Ar, Kr, Xe, O 2 , N 2 , CO, NO and H 2 by thermal energy He(2 1 S) and He(2 3 S) metastable atoms has been measured using a beam-gas cell technique. Where comparisons can be made, the ratios are in good agreement with previous gas cell measurements, but disagree with results obtained in afterglow studies.
