Randomized animal trial examines the growth-promoting impact of soybean oil across different dietary protein sources in chicks, indicating critical nutrient interactions.
THE GROWTH promoting effect of the addition of unsaturated fats to low fat diets for chicks has been demonstrated with diets based on isolated soybean protein and glucose by Rand et al. (1958) and Dam et al. (1959). However, Bieri et al. (1956) reported that there was no growth response at 4 weeks of age to the addition of 4% corn oil to a low fat diet based on casein, gelatin and glucose. The following study was conducted to determine the effect of protein source on the growth promoting action of soybean oil. Day old White Plymouth Rock chicks obtained from a commercial hatchery were randomly distributed, and housed in battery brooders with raised wire floors and thermostatically controlled electric heaters. Duplicate lots of 10 male chicks were used per treatment. Feed and water were supplied ad libitum. Purified low fat diets were prepared with isolated soybean protein, fillet …
