As a group of midwives having recently completed the A26 course for developing the accountable practitioner, we were requested to develop a midwifery model for use in Pontefract. This evolved not only as a result of the Department of Health's Changing Childbirth report (1993), but also due to criticism of the apparent lack of a suitable midwifery model in our unit.
