The thermal roughening of a vicinal Cu(115) surface has been studied by helium beam diffraction. Peak profiles have been measured. Their shape is found in good agreement with a model previously proposed by Villain et al. The roughening temperature is found to be T R = 380 K. The anisotropy of the profile predicted by this model has been detected for the first time. From this data the interaction energy between steps is found to be (120 ± 20) K per lattice spacing. The formation energy of a kink is also estimated.
