High-resolution transmission electron micrographs from a rapidly cooled Al-Mn alloy confirm at an atomic level the existence of a phase exhibiting icosahedral point symmetry and a form of long-range icosahedral order. The interpretation of the micrographs in terms of various models of the atomic structure of this phase is discussed.
