A comprehensive up-to-date review of the synthesis and reactions of benzo-1,3-dithioles, benzo-1,3-diselenoles and benzo-1,3-ditelluroles is presented. An appreciable synthetic potential of these chalcogen-containing heterocycles for the preparation of dibenzotetrachalcogenafulvalenes, particularly carbonyl compounds and hydrocarbons, is displayed.
