A cleavage face, (001) face, of galena, lead sulphide, was treated in different ways, e.g. slightly etched with HCl, polished, etc. We have taken an electron diffraction pattern from these different types of surfaces. In a parallel series of experiments NaCl has been crystallized on these surfaces and the result of overgrowth experiments has been watched through the microscope. The information about the nature of the surface, obtained by the first method, electron diffraction, was in most cases confirmed by the latter.
