The details of construction of a practical, electrically heated carbon tube furnace are described. The furnace may be rapidly heated to 3,000° C, or any lower temperature and held within ±20° C of any end temperature for several hours. A uniform black body chamber of at least 15 in. (380 mm.) length and 2 in. (51 mm.) diameter is provided having a capacity of 300 to 500 grams of charge. Volt‐ampere characteristics and energy values are given which are valid for the design of larger units.
