This article describes the low-voltage red SrTiO3:Pr,Al phosphors prepared by solid-state sintering for field emission displays. The characteristics of these phosphors will be discussed. For phosphors fired at 1000 °C for 10 h, it was found that the value of full width at half maximum of x-ray diffraction spectra increased little even after being doped with Pr or Al. The photoluminescence (PL) intensities varied with the concentrations of PrCl3 and Al(OH)3 with the maximum red emission at PrCl3=0.5 mol %. The PL spectra show that Al acts as an enhancer for red emission. This phenomenon is also observed from cathodoluminescent measurements. For an electron-gun voltage of 2 kV and an anode current of 2 μA, a luminance of 12.2 cd/m2 is obtained. The Commission International de l’Echairage chromaticity coordinates of SrTiO3:Pr,Al of x=0.6 and y=0.33, is red emission.
