The results of an experimental investigation into the role of ``end effects'' in Taylor-Couette flow with moderate aspect ratio up to 47 are presented. The investigation has concentrated on the lower and upper stability limits for the steady ``anomalous'' 40-cell state. It is found that the finite length of the cylinders plays a crucial role in determining the overall stability of the flow.
