Percutaneous lead extraction using an excimer laser successfully treated a very late perforation of a Riata implantable cardioverter-defibrillator lead occurring 8 years after implantation.
Case Report (n=1)
Lead perforation should be considered as a potential complication even years after ICD implantation, and can be successfully managed with percutaneous extraction.
Very late ICD lead perforation may occur years after implantation; this case leaves open questions on surveillance and extraction strategies.
Cardiac perforation by a transvenous lead is an uncommon but serious complication. We herein present a case of very late perforation of a Riata implantable cardioverter-defibrillator lead, which occurred 8 years after implantation. The patient was successfully treated with percutaneous lead extraction using an excimer laser. Lead perforation should be considered, even after years from implantation.
