The cross section for the scattering of sound by a vortex is calculated using the linearized equations of classical hydrodynamics. With a circulation κ, the differential cross section in the long-wavelength limit is 1/2π(κ2πc)²ksin²φ(1-cosφ)^-2, where c is the speed of sound. Possible experimental verification is suggested, with particular reference to liquid He II.
