The possible presence of a relationship between psychosocial characteristics and gynaecological complaints was explored in a group of 210 patients. Patients presenting with different types of gynaecological complaints did so according to a multistructured pattern showing recurring combinations of complaintsIn the combination of complaints relating to ‘menstrual problems' the amount of perceived social support seems to be quite good as opposed to the combination of complaints concerning non-cyclic abdominal pain in which such support was less present. In women complaining of irregular bleeding, mostly because of the climacteric, a rather outspoken degree of (health) locus of external control can be found.
