Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of 50 V and 51 V in the weak paramagnet SmVO 4 at low temperatures have been fitted to the spin Hamiltonian. H=- gamma /sub ///h(cross)B z I z - gamma perpendicular to h(cross)(B x I x +B y I y )+P(I z 2 - 1 / 3 I(I+1)). The measured ratio of the quadrupole splittings gives an improved value for the ratio of the nuclear electric quadrupole moments mod 50 Q/ 51 Q mod =4.019(4).
