Photocrosslinkable polymers containing pendant chalcone groups were prepared by the reaction of 4′‐substituted‐4‐carboxychalcone (4‐R‐CC) with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in homogeneous dimethylacetamide (DMA) solutions using 2,4,6‐trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB) as condensing agents. The mechanism of ester formation is mainly discussed for 4‐carboxychalcones on the basis of the isolated intermediates and mass spectrometry. The modified polymers showed excellent properties as photocrosslinkable polymers and the photosensitivity was confirmed in the range of about 1 to 5 mJ/cm2.
