Third-order optical nonlinearities have been evaluated for organic materials in powder, solution, and film forms, by third-harmonic generation (THG) measurement. Considerations of the effects of THG interference between film sample and substrate, and of the effect of THG in air, are made for an accurate x(3) evaluation. Several types of monomeric and polymeric materials are examined by this method.
