A simple and rapid procedure is described for the correction of line shapes observed in any branch of spectroscopy, for distortions governed by the equation f( x 0 ) = ∫ ∞ - ∞ g ( x ) h ( x 0 - x ) dx where f ( x ) is the observed line shape, g ( x ) the true line shape and h ( x ) an instrumental or intrinsic broadening function, provided that the moments of h ( x ) are finite As an illustration the method is applied to the case of the distortion, inherent in the modulation technique, of magnetic resonance spectra. Formulae for the correction of moments of lines are also given.
