M.easurements of the Faraday rotation of a 136.98 Mc/s signal radiated from the geostationary satellite Syncom 3 is used to determine the time variation in the total electron content in the ionosphere. Gqod agreement of the time variation between the Faraday rotation and the square of J0F2is found, and the slope of the line of this relationship is determined by the distribution of electron density at a particular height. Absolute values of total electron content are determined from the intercept on the ordinate intersected by this line. Good agreement is maintained not only on the quiet day, but also on the disturbed day.
