The paper describes an automatic laser interferometer for the calibration of line standards up to 2 m which is developed in National Research Laboratory of Metrology. The principles of construction, the performance of the apparatus and the errors arised from the apparatus are given. The errors caused by the misalignments of the optical systems, by the mechanical deformation of the base member and by fluctuation of translation speed of the carriage are estimated. Experiments have shown the errors are less than 0.2 μm.
