It has been shown that macro-glycolipids isolated from human erythrocytes react with all anti-I sera tested. Structural studies by the methylation method and periodate oxidation provided evidence for the hypothesis that the I antigen can be regarded as a mosaic structure, and that some anti-I sera can react with an internal portion of the sugar structure of macro-glycolipids. A tentative structure of the I-antigen complex has been proposed.
