A novel heptacyclic C37 alkane presenting a regular polyprenoid structure has been isolated from a biodegraded bituminous rock and identified by NMR; this hydrocarbon is the most highly cyclized polyprenoid alkane ever completely identified; the absence of specific methyl groups give clues to unprecedented biological precursor lipids resulting from the extensive cyclization of regular octaprenoids.
