The contributions of ionic and metastable secondary electron emission to breakdown initiation in nitrogen has been investigated by the time delay method. For this purpose, a tube with two electrode pairs was made and an electric circuit designed which, by synchronized impulses on auxiliary electrodes, removes ions from the inter-electrode space. Also, the influence of a small additional ionization caused by gamma irradiation on the breakdown time was considered.
