A new plane wave approximation for calculating exchange scattering amplitudes is described and applied to the calculation of some singlet-triplet cross sections in helium. Comparison is made with experimental measurements of both total and differential cross sections. It is shown that a considerable improvement over previous techniques is obtained but that there remain significant differences between the theory presented and experimental measurement.
