The jump-rate problem in a periodic potential is exactly solved in the whole damping range by a Fourier analysis of the energy width of the first-Brillouin-zone dynamic structure factor, numerically calculated by the matrix-continued-fraction method. An analytical solution of the escape problem from a bimetastable potential is obtained and its relationship with the solution of the periodic problem is discussed.
