The nuclear scattering and energy-loss of fast β particles with energy about 2 × 10 6 ev. has been studied, using a cloud chamber filled with a xenon-oxygen mixture. A radon source in conjunction with an electron lens was used to provide a fairly homogeneous beam of electrons. The results obtained for the angular distribution of scattering are in agreement with Mott's formula. The collisions in which the particles lose 50 per cent or more of their original energy are found to be about six times more frequent than the theoretical number for energy-loss by emission of collision radiation.
