A preparation rich in luteinizing hormone activity was obtained by ion exchange and exclusion chromatography of an ethanolic ammonium acetate extract of human pituitary glands. Disc electrophoresis of this material at an alkaline pH revealed the presence of 3 major protein components. Electrophoresis in a sucrose density gradient accomplished a separation ofthese 3 components, each of which possessed luteinizing hormone activity. Although each isolated component appeared to be homogeneous by disc electrophoresis at an alkaline pH and by analytical exclusion chromatography, all 3 exhibited small but significant thyrotropic activity.
