The periphery-pump performance is analyzed in terms of shear stresses imparted to the fluid by the impeller. The resulting expressions include two shear coefficients and an average impeller velocity, which are determined experimentally. The analysis predicts the shapes of the performance curves of head, power, and efficiency as functions of the flow rate. The shear coefficients, and hence the pump performance, are shown to be functions of the impeller roughness, and of the flow channel area.
