A fractured circular mapping catheter entrapped in the mitral valve apparatus was successfully removed without sequelae using a transseptally positioned vascular extraction nipper and a basket catheter.
Case Report (n=1)
Highlights a rare complication of circular mapping catheter entrapment and fracture during pulmonary vein isolation, and describes a successful percutaneous extraction technique.

Provides a percutaneous extraction option for rare mapping catheter entrapment; leaves open generalizability beyond this single case.
We report on the entrapment of a circular mapping catheter in the mitral valve apparatus during segmental pulmonary vein isolation. In an attempt to remove the catheter by using mild traction in combination with clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation, the circular part and the shaft of the catheter separated. The circular part could be removed without sequelae using a transseptally positioned vascular extraction nipper in combination with a basket catheter.

Tavernier et al. (2003) conducted a case report in Segmental pulmonary vein isolation (n=1). Catheter extraction using a vascular extraction nipper and basket catheter was evaluated on Catheter removal. A fractured circular mapping catheter entrapped in the mitral valve apparatus was successfully removed without sequelae using a transseptally positioned vascular extraction nipper and a basket catheter.
