The neutron number distributions from the spontaneous fission of seven isotopes have been measured by use of a cadmium-loaded liquid scintillation tank. The experimental distributions can be roughly approximated by binomial distributions. The average number of neutrons per spontaneous fission have been found to be 2.30±{}0.19 for Pu²³⁶, 2.33±{}0.08 for Pu²³⁸, 2.18±{}0.09 for Pu²⁴², 2.65±{}0.09 for Cm²⁴², 2.84±{}0.09 for Cm²⁴⁴, and 3.82±{}0.12 for Cf²⁵², all based on 2.257±{}0.046 for Pu²⁴⁰.
