Compared to the supine position, cardiac index decreased significantly in the knee-chest position (20%) and on pelvic props (17%), but not on an evacuatable mattress (11%) or pillows (3%).
Why the study?
Do different surgical prone positions affect cardiovascular parameters in healthy volunteers compared to the supine position?
Do different surgical prone positions affect cardiovascular parameters in healthy volunteers compared to the supine position?
Surgical prone positioning, particularly knee-chest and pelvic props, significantly decreases cardiac index in healthy volunteers compared to the supine position.

Certain prone positions may reduce cardiac index in surgery; leaves open effects on patient outcomes and need for trials.
Wadsworth et al. (1996) studied Healthy (n=20). Surgical prone positions (pillows, evacuatable mattress, pelvic props, knee-chest) vs. Normal supine position was evaluated on Cardiac index. Compared to the supine position, cardiac index decreased significantly in the knee-chest position (20%) and on pelvic props (17%), but not on an evacuatable mattress (11%) or pillows (3%).
