A metabolite, 6-pentyl-α-pyrone (6PAP), with antibiotic properties, derived from species of Trichoderma, has been analysed by a rapid ethyl acetate extraction technique and determined quantitatively by HPLC. The procedure described is suitable for the selection of effective antagonist Trichoderma strains based on 6PAP production. A strong correlation is shown between the amount of pyrone produced and the ability of some Trichoderma strains to inhibit mycelial growth of Botrytis cinerea. The inhibitory effect of 6PAP on the germination of conidia of B. cinerea is also demonstrated.
