Preoperative transthoracic echocardiography conducted by anesthesiologists in two patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy led to the adjustment of surgical plans and anesthetic management.
Why the study?
The potential of preoperative transthoracic echocardiography conducted by anesthesiologists in assessing patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is frequently underestimated.

Does preoperative TTE by anesthesiologists alter management in HCM patients undergoing noncardiac surgery?
Preoperative TTE by anesthesiologists can identify critical findings in HCM patients that alter surgical and anesthetic management.
May support individualized TTE by anesthesiologists in HCM; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before broader use.
Transthoracic echocardiographic (TTE) assessment, conducted by anesthesiologists at bedside, plays a pivotal role in the hemodynamic management for patients with cardiac diseases or in the setting of perioperative refractory hypotension. However, the potential of preoperative TTE in assessing patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is frequently underestimated. As a result, different findings were identified by the anesthesiologist-conducted preoperative TTE exams, which led to the adjustment of the surgical plan and anesthetic management. Herein, we discuss two cases of preoperative application of TTE for HCM patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery.

Lu et al. (2023) conducted a case report in Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) undergoing noncardiac surgery (n=2). Preoperative transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was evaluated on Adjustment of surgical plan and anesthetic management.
