Key result
Patients with cerebral infarction exhibited a significantly higher incidence of irreversible platelet aggregation in response to PAF compared to healthy controls (62.5% vs 11.0%), alongside elevated plasma PAF acetylhydrolase activity.
Why the study?
Are platelet aggregation induced by PAF and plasma PAF acetylhydrolase activity increased in patients with cerebral infarction compared to healthy controls?
Case-Control (n=105)
Yes
Are platelet aggregation induced by PAF and plasma PAF acetylhydrolase activity increased in patients with cerebral infarction compared to healthy controls?
Absolute Event Rate: 62.5% vs 11%
p-value: p=<0.001
Patients with chronic cerebral infarction exhibit augmented platelet aggregation induced by PAF and increased plasma PAF acetylhydrolase activity, suggesting PAF plays a role in platelet hyperfunction in this population.
Suggests PAF pathway involvement in cerebral infarction; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.

Satoh et al. (1988) conducted a case-control in Cerebral infarction (n=105). Cerebral infarction vs. Age-matched healthy controls was evaluated on Incidence of irreversible platelet aggregation in response to 40 ng/ml PAF (p=<0.001). Patients with cerebral infarction exhibited a significantly higher incidence of irreversible platelet aggregation in response to PAF compared to healthy controls (62.5% vs 11.0%), alongside elevated plasma PAF acetylhydrolase activity.
