The particular challenges of being adopted

Adoptees face a number of special challenges on the road to emotional maturity and consolidation of identity. Responses to these challenges vary widely, one extreme response resembling what has been termed “the adoptee syndrome.” Drawing on the author's years of experience working with adult adoptees, both clinically and in the “search and support” movement, this paper describes the distinct challenges inherent in the adoptee's situation.
