Laboratory study demonstrates the fabrication of U-6Mo alloy from electrochemically reduced uranium dioxide, indicating comparable electrochemical properties to standard reactor-grade fuels.
Preparation of U-6Mo alloy using metallic uranium obtained by direct oxide electrochemical reduction of UO2 is outlined in this work. Multiple batches of pellets of 10 g each were sampled and analyzed for uranium content before and after partial removal of oxide layer. Each batch was further divided into sub-batches for arc-melting to prepare uranium buttons and then U-6Mo alloy buttons. Present work evolved around characterization of arc-melted alloy buttons by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy and followed up by preliminary open-circuit potential measurement in LiCl-KCl-UCl3 melt against U3+|U reference couple to compare the results with that of standard U-6Mo alloy prepared using reactor grade uranium.
