Studies on the Genus Forcipomyia. 1. the North American Parasitic Midges of the Subgenus Trichohelea (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)1

The 9 North American species of the subgenus Trichohelca of the genus Forcipomyia are described and illustrated, of which 3 are new: F. goniognatha from Mexico, F. leptognatha from Kansas, and F. veroensis from Florida. F. saundersi Chan is synonymized with F. mcateei Wirth. Subgeneric classification and characters are discussed, a key is given for recognition of the North American species, and a checklist is presented of the 37 known species.
